Assassinations: Really?
February 1, 2008 by Seasons
When I heard that another MP had been shot dead, I drafted a post but unfortunately, the titles I came up with would have made people think that am mocking the death of a leader. Titles like “Too shot too’, ‘They shot Too too”, would have confused readers outside Kenya.
Anyhow, I decided not to put up the post and read through the KBW aggregator. I noticed that many bloggers reported the shooting of the MP as an assassination. It is interesting how quickly people decided that this was an assassination when all reports pointed to a crime of passion.
Wikipedia describes Assassination as the targeted killing of an individual who is in a high-profile position. An added distinction between assassination and other forms of killing is that the assassin has an ideological or political motivation, though many assassins (especially those not part of an organization) also demonstrate insanity; other motivations are money (contract killing), revenge, or a military operation.
How would bloggers know that this was an assassination barely minutes after the death was reported? Imagine the egg in your face when this is proven to have been a crime of passion and the end of a philanderer. How about reporting about the killing and wait for facts to be reported.
Many people are alluding that the government killed the MPs. I have been asking myself of what political value these two MP’s would deliver for the government to have them killed. I still cant fathom what they would gain.
There is another school of thought that their own party could have been involved in their demise. It is alleged that they were about to defect and thus had to be eliminated to send a message to other would-be defectors. Whilst this is plausible, I also don’t subscribe to the theory.
Conspiracy theories abound but I believe there is no political connection to the murders although politicians will use the killings to their gain.
I would love to believe you, that there is no politics involved -sincerely!
But this Kenya that I know of late points there directly, it is unfortunate that it had to come to this.
The point of assassination is that someone gains from the death of the assassinated. But in this case, at the risk of speaking ill of the dead, he was a bit obscure for an assassination. I believe the other one(story)
Maybe coz most Kenyans have never seen a motor cycle traffic cop with a firearm would make this shooting by a traffic cop suspicious.
The facts are, PNU & Kibaki must make sure by the time parliament reconvenes, ODM doesnt have the numbers that saw them win the speakers positions. Second, PNU & Kibaki have to intimidate those ODM fellows who are still alive with fear of being killed. But why are some of the members targets specifically? Am made to understand they took the bribe to vote PNU speakers, but still voted Marende and his deputy.
So there are very good reasons why PNU & Kibaki are assassinating these guys. And because we are told by reliable sources that five are going down, 2 are gone, we dont know who;s next but we are sure PNU & Kibaki are now not afraid of assassinations. The first one was at night, the second one was in broad daylight.
The assassin wasnt a policeman for your information. He’s a paid mungiki militia in police uniform. He was in court today for record purposes and he will be freed tomorrow.
what can u and me do with Kibaki and PNU? As he rightfully says, Hakunaaaa.
First I want to dispel the use of wikipedia as an authority in anything.
According to the dictionary, “assassination is the murder of a public figure”. It does not have to be for political reasons.
Too death is murder and he is a public figure by virtue of being an elected MP.
His murder was suspect and the police have chosen to play politics over it. Since we can not trust the Kenyan police it is fair to say that his death may have been political. I can not over-rule that this was a crime of passion but I doubt if we will ever find out the truth given the nature of our police force and judiciary.
Were’s death was termed as ‘normal’ thuggery and Too’s was a love triangle gone sour.
Going by past killings, no Kenyan politician has ever been assassinated. Go figure.
So was Too assassinated? Yes.
What we don’t know is why the policeman killed him.
Lost White Kenyan Chick has a very interesting analysis of Too’s death.

The Kenyan police/ government/ investigative bodies have no investigative skills. Every investigation they conduct just leaves the public confused and with more questions…
That said all we are left with is conspiracy theories. And in Kenyan conspiracy theories dictate that no big wig is just murdered they have to be assasinated and politics has to be involved (eg; Father Kaizer, Judge Babu, Too, Were) so that their deaths can make sense.
Eunice Nganga’s comment is unacceptable. Leaving it up is a dereliction of responsibility.
now seems the woman who was shot with Mr. Too is indeed his cousin. Unfortunately the woman, Eunice Chepkwony has died so we will never get her side of the story.
The curious thing is the certainty with which the police concluded the motives of the murder even before the body was in the mortuary. A cop has been arrested he will be taken to court tomorrow, he will deny the charges and it will be years even before the trial begins. In fact there might never be a trial. That is the way the Kenyan system works. In fact this is the perfect way to handle these cases. Arrest someone like they did with the Mbai case, wait forever for the trial and just bury the case. People forget the Mbai case is still unresolved and whoever committed the murder went Scot free as planned.
Usually it is the cops telling people not to jump to conclusions about motives in such high profile murders. In this case they had the case closed right off the bat, with motive suspect and everything. So far there is no evidence that the suspect has confessed. That means all the information is coming from the police side.
The Mungiki angle is still plausible. The speculations are all over the place. We have just concluded the most brutal month in the history of independent Kenya and we are starting February with a bang. I can see a lot of trouble ahead. Kericho is already on fire as we speak. Just when you thought things would calm down we have this. Two opposition M.P’s shot dead in two days. Never hapenned before. They used to take breaks in between these things. Someone is in a hurry. None of this may work as planned.
Does anyone know what Henry Kosgey has to do with the slain MP’S? and why has Ngilu kept her mouth shut at the moment?
