African Woman Sets Herself on Fire To Protest Racism
March 5, 2008 by Seasons
Sad stuff…
The horrifying sight which traumatized shoppers and office workers in the centre of Luxembourg City last week has now been labeled as a protest against racism. The Belgian woman of Congolese origin who set herself alight in the middle of Place d’Armes told witnesses that she was! doing it to protest against racism, moments before she carried out th e desperate act which has left her in hospital fighting for her life.
Maggy Delvaux-Mufu, a mother of three in her forties, alerted several national newspapers late on Tuesday morning last week that she would be burning herself alive on place des Martyrs at 12.45 am, before setting out accompanied by her husband to walk through the centre of town to her macabre rendezvous. The police were alerted and
But the woman changed her plan when she came a cro ss a group of journalists gathered to cover an event organized by the ‘Movement écologique’ on Place d’Armes, opposite the Cercle municipal. She soaked herself in petrol before confronting the members of the press, announcing that she was about to sacrifice her life to protest against racism. Moments later, she struck a match, turning herself into a human torch in front of hundreds of people.
Delvaux-Mufu’ s husband and passers-by jumped on the burning body, attempting to stifle the flames with coats and jackets. The sce! ne made several people feel unwell and many witnesses who filled the square at lunchtime were traumatized by the woman’s shrieking screams of unimaginable pain. The flames were already extinguished when police, rescue services and the fire brigade arrived at the scene. One person is reported to have vomited after seeing the woman being transported into an ambulance. The events in Place d’Armes have also started a controversy regarding the authorities’ lack of psychological support for witnesses.
Delvaux-Mufu was taken to the Bon Secours hospital in Metz , where she is being treated in a specialized ward for burns and is fighting for her life. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa visited the woman and her family at the hospital last week.
RTL television was the first to run a news flash about the incident on its website on Tuesday afternoon last week. 352 reported the bulletin in its news in brief section, shortly before going to print. Events preceding the incident only came to light later on in the week.
The 42-year-old Belgian citizen and her husband had been facing financial difficulties. They had recently indebted themselves by buying a Citroën garage in Oberwampach, before realizing they were missing the documents that would allow them to set up a business. Delvaux-Mufu wrote a letter to Le Jeudi recounting her story of bureaucratic difficulties and economic despair. “I’m against all forms of violence, but day after day, my family and I have to endure moral violence, discrimination, insults and much more from Mr Juncker’s administration” , she said in the letter published last week.
Money problems had driven the woman to desperately plead her case at the Prime minister’s office early on the same day of the incident. Her threat to burn herself alive on Place des Martyrs after being turned away by the authorities caused government officials to contact the police. A city-wide search was organized, but nobody could foresee the woman would change her plans.”

I saw this pics a few weeks ago and just felt sick…thats beyond drastic.
Beyond drastic. Have you ever had to suffer day after day with the type of berating, racism, slander, ill treatment that this lady and millions of other blacks do daily? If not then you could not possibly know how desperate you feel to just have something make people open their eyes to what is going on.
In fact why does someone have to go to drastic measures just to be seen as a human individual with needs, wants and desires for equal treatment. Why does it seem that blacks all over this planet have to suffer the same fate at the hands of the same people whether they are in Belgium, U.S., Africa or any other nation.
I am just confused as to what the problem is that non black people are so consumed with the constant hate for those of the darker races.
I am sick as well, sick that it has to come to this for someone. Sick that equality is a joke to people. Sick that anyone has to suffer then show their suffering to the people they are living amongst who turned their head away from her suffering before this.
Thanks
This is testament to the awesome power of blogs and bloggers the world over. It appears that this incidence took place in 2007 per certain sources -

but it now seems to have resurfaced all over the net. Thanks for reincarnating this. We should never forget people like Maggy.
This was not on my radar until today. What a way to make a statement. Like many women, however, she ran a large risk to try and get heard. i hope that people pick up on this story.
For the millions of people of color in the dispora who see this kind of distress daily, we salute and honor your courage to get up and walk strong every day.
The anguish of racism can not be put into words. This acts definitely speaks louder than words.
I am always applaud by the narrow minded people who use the colour of our skin to define our characters, our ability, our dignity.
[...] Seasons and Reasons is a Kenyan blogger who highlighted the woman who set herself on fire to protest racism. Check out his pictures and words about this story that barely emerged as a top story, but highlights the kind of despair many people of color face in trying to make their lives in a predominantly white world. Its melancholy truth that Racism is here to stay…But do someone have to take desperate measures for the world to notice?…Somebody tell me please , am i supposed to recite poetry to an Afrikaans who thinks that his skin colour makes him better than me and goes on to term me a Bloody Kaffir?
The bible tells us to Forgive and Forget..and i do that without questions..it tells me to love my brothers..my neighbours more than i love myself..i try my best to do that…but then its a different story with Afrikaans..
My buddies and I were thrown out of an all whites sports bar last friday..they said we looked like trouble makers despite the fact that we were companied by a well -known and respected black surgeon.. What do to what to do..definately not smile..right?
I think she is plain ass crazy! Now what has she achieved eh? Pain and anguish for the rest of her life if she survives and more money troubles for her husband.
Ati racism… so what! Life is hard EVERYWHERE! Just see what happened in Kenya from late December to Early Feb. Ever since that mess, I feel nothing for racism, infact I don’t blame zungu’s for it.
Absolutely… Racism is not right. I am not saying it should live on…my argument is , IF YOUR OWN BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY are going to BURN AND CUT YOU TO DEATH, in the name of tribalism (we are better than they are) then how can we start being outraged when zungus start hating on us and making life economically difficult
Fact of the matter is that one has to fight to be on top or to stay afloat. Life is a game and one has to play ….by the rules or not!
Don’t burn yourself… what kind of madness. Shenzi woman!
I live in Europe and I can almost understand the desparation, the fear, and how wrong information can put you in serious financial issues… but but but… has she achieved anything really?
So now we know life is hard in Europe for non-whites. Will it change anything?
I am sorry that I do not feel sorry for her. I am being hard on her for being stupid and foolish. I will still ask….
“what has she achieved”
Thanks for those comments but I tend to agree with Mrembo on this one.
I have faced racism here at home myself.
This is an extreme and I cant see why she would do this to herself.
I have been to congo and it is still possible to make a decent living there if one works smart. The lady could have come back to Africa if she wanted
the blacksent…. I’m not burning myself for any reason. Go read martin luther king and see there are ways to confront issues…
I don’t cheka with these Afrikaans..call me kaffir and we square it there and then..I have learnt from my Zim friend, always drive around with a shortgun tucked under your car seat…if a jungu calls you a kaffir, just go for the damn thing..it worked once for the Zim guy…He sent the jungus scampering for safety..
Africans especially my Congo friends believe that wamefika once in the Diaspora..they is never a better way to tell a Congo to go back home…They will tell you ” makuta(money) iko ulaya”…
I am not in anyway saying that she “should” have done this. But I can understand. Do any of you think it would be better if she were to take her frustration out on those who are subjugating her? Would that make them take notice? These are questions that needs to be asked. People are on here saying that it got her no where. Then what WILL get her and the rest of us somewhere? What do we need to do since this seems to be a worldwide thing of “let’s hate on blacks.”
People say what shouldn’t be done, but no one offers a clue as to what she SHOULD have done.
@Theblacksentinel: What needs to be done is for people to continue or start living their lives the best possible way.
I am a firm believer that HATE and INTOLERANCE (sometimes known as racism, discrimination, tribalism, etc etc) are here to stay as long as their polar opposites love and compassion exist.
What should she have done? I have read the post again and it seems that money problems were the root of the issue and some bureaucracy obstacles while attempting to set up a business.
Regarding the money, get advice from local library, Council, those ads for money advice in yellow pages. If Belgium is anything like Denmark, there is information around all one has to do is ASK
The bureaucracy, she should have have stuck at it.
My experience in Europe is that one has to “up their game” in order to make it here. Things are the way they are. Some can be fought, some cannot. The best one can do is be one step ahead at all the time. You have to be better, work harder. We chose(some are forced ) to come to Europe, so you get to play the game according to the rules.
For whatever reason it should never come to this sadly desperation is a whole new book. I think this lady was desperate and maybe frustrated which didnt help during the decision making process. Life in diaspora or otherwise demands resilience without which a lot of things will not happen for an individual or group. I cant help but think that there was a better way to handle it.
Racism or not, I am not chomaing myself to put my point across. Clearly this mami had issues and needs to see a shrink…ASAP!!! Now what will her kids think? It’s not right. What happened to using a megaphone?
By the way…..you have been tagged!
This woman is responsible for her own actions and for this outcome.
I don’t pity her. Belgium and other European countries are plagued by African immigrants taking advantage of their generous welfare programs. Apparently that was not enough for this woman. She went into business and failed, and she wants the taxpayers to pay for that too.
I feel sorry for those stupid enough to pity this woman. This woman planned this, publicized it, and then did it. She is responsible for this - not Whites, not Europeans, and not the media.
Wow. I feel for her 3 kids. Honestly, once you’re a mother, you’re not allowed to do such things. What becomes of your children then?
Lyn,
Why is it that everytime someone mentions that a person was African or minority in some way, it always falls back to welfare programs? Do you know for a fact that this woman was on welfare? Do you know for a fact that her business failed?
The largest majority of people on welfare are white people yet no one ever throws out that welfare wasn’t enough for them when they do something. Are these African’s not taxpayers as well as white people? Or is it your contention that white people are alwasy supporting minorities through welfare no matter the country or people?
You need to get in touch with your inner racist and stop with the generalizations. Fine the woman did something that was considered stupid. But, I guess the discrimination that these and other minorities have to live with is commendable. What is stupid is that people continue to look down upon minorities or should I say non whites.
It is people with your very mindset that caused this woman to feel she had no choice but to make a stupid act like this public. To continue to blame everyone but the people who are doling out the stupidity through racism you might as well be condoning and supporting it. Because to sit idle you support racism through your complacency.
Nhe’s a very stupid woman. that can never and will never help the situation of racism.
No one should follow her steps. we learn to belive in ourslevies and see yourslef as the best.
don’t let some one who dosen’t know himslef make you feel nasty about urself.
I’m a BLACK African and no one, i mean no one will ever make me feel unwanted for any reason or whatever. as long as i have my two hands i will servive.
They are trying to squesse welfare in it now because it a black woman.
LONG LIVE THE BLACK RACE LONG LIVE MAMA AFRICA!!!!!!!!!
long live THE BLACK RACE.
[...] came across this information on another blog (found here). [...]
BURN BABY BURN!…..look at that bitch go!
As sad as this, there are far more versions of discrimination than against just the black people, no matter where you are. I don’t agree with her lighting herself on fire and I’m not sure how that was supposed to combat racism at all. It seems to get a lot of pity and respect from the people posting here but how does that change anything? It doesn’t help her or anyone else out of that kind of situation. There are other ways and I don’t believe the European or even American culture is so backward as to not provide the right kind of help and respect for those that really try to find it, white, black, or any other race or culture.
