Idols East Africa; Why is Angela Angwenyi a judge?

I was watching the comedy show reality show Idols East Africa on Sunday evening and the best thing about the show is the stage decor and lighting. Everything is else is dull and flat. Once in while a contestant who was not tone deaf would appear but then the judges would end up not picking them. That is not the subject of this post though.
I can understand why TK Siyandi and Scar are judges. TK is a well known music producer in Zambia and Scar is a top selling hip-hop artist who has won a Kora and a Channel O music award. What I cant fathom is why Angela Angwenyi is a judge. She has no music experience except for winning Kenya night in a local bar a few years ago and hosting karoake at the Safari bar in Nairobi.
Don’t get me wrong, Angela is an excellent radio presenter for a mid-morning magazine show and quite pleasing to the eye but that is not qualification to judge musical talent.
Angela kept complementing the girls on their fashion sense and the boys on their looks and kept laughing at the bad singers. She makes the an already bad show worse.
With the American version of the show running on the same channel and the second Tusker Project Fame running on Citizen TV, I cant see this show keeping viewers hooked unless of course you are addicted to bad TV shows.
I understand that they turned away Kenyans well versed in the music industry from judging the show and picked Angela instead..maybe they are actually looking for Karaoke singers.

I thought it was only me who rated it 0.1%. For sure Angela has nothing to offer. We need someone to kick pips like that one on TPF2.
yeah, bana, i noticed the “oh i like your hair” “i love your shoes” and the like…yeeesh! surely we have better people to judge musicians…and not their dress-code.
hehehehe, and the looney who played the guitar behind his head while ‘looking them in the eye’ was the highlight for me….totally!

Good I am not alone in making that observation. although it cant be too hard to judge those auditions with those so laughable performances but at least the judge should say something about the music.

On the actual participants after seeing American Idols which also has its share of awful auditions I wonder if we can get a star out here but hey its meant to be entertainment right?

TPF2 over idols anyday though it has me laughing so for that i give then 4/10.
Seriously, Anjela Angwenyi is doing fine, complementing doesnt restrict her job description. She lives in a music world and that is enough qualification. we gatta snop sneering at her opinions unles they are drastically damaging.
Hey, I like Angela. So she compliments the girls just a teeny weeny too much and says nice things ’bout some guys… but hey, (some real cute guys were in Nairobi) i think she is objective and balances out the guys.
However i agree with you on one point… It’s definitely a comedy show….

Every Idol (and its spawns) try to copy the AI format, as in one good male judge who says nothing, one ditsy chick who has a mediocre career and a nasty judge! For real see Paula abdul, Danii Minogue I lie not!
It’s all nonsense. The judges are ALL bogus. Especially that wannabe Simon Cowell - Scar. Can’t stand the boy! He would not recognise a star if it came out of the sky and burned him! Bogus I say. Bogus!

After watching the TZ auditions I think the judges are beginning to loosen up they were too uptight in Nai. The contestants however are getting more and more hilarious.
Those TZ ones were funny! There was a guy who sang a Bob Marley song that was so funny that they asked him to repeat whilst playing a guitar. He sounded worse! I thibk they only got 4 people thru in Dar
all i can say is i enjoy the comedic part of the auditions, thts as far as ill watch just for a good laugh.
and angela? well i dont know who she is but i think she looks good anyway…lol i dont care if shes qualified to judge or not.sexy works for me any day…peace

You can’t hate Scar mannn. Scar is only doing part of his assigned job as a tough judge. His part helps other would be idols to tighten up on what they want to come and present for the world to see. I’m watching it right now on KTN, laughing so hard at some of these so-called “performances” !! especially the JVC chic (Jaluo very confident) in an orange top, belt & shoes who walked in with madoido mingi…can’t sing…got benched so hard!

The haaa haaa rapper is my all-time favorite at the mo.That was classic.Scar on the other hand…he keeps complaining ati the contestants are wasting the judges’ time.I mean hello…..didn’t he know what to expect when he took up the “PAYING-JOB” there are people that have convinced themselves or have been lied to that their shower rhyme will do.

he he idols aduition were the borm. as in those guys, memba that guy said he will sing a bob marley song and started talking a bob marley song……that was crap, scar told him to spit a ryme and he couldn’t that was harsh yani. the other guy who was like boo cha boocha am from new york city. that guy really got to me as in he speaks black american english and he is in kenya , that is too way out of the line.
anyway l like angele she can actually sing and she was best fit to judge, l believe first impression matters so angele was commenting on the attires.

This Idols is not for talent but for confirming to those back at home watching that we’ve got talent though it only stretches to the showers!
Angela has a mediocre show and as a result is there to judge mediocre talent what she can handle.

I seem to have a problem with all the judges. They are not very diplomatic when they are addressing the contestants especially those they say ‘no’ to. You are not ‘idols material’, ‘you are not what we are looking for.’ For Gods sake these young people are raw. You are not looking for pros. Secondly I think the contestants are made to sing for too long. A few seconds is good enough!
Compared to West Africa Idol judges, i think the East Coast judges are very very raw. The judges are not fit to be on this show. Please change them and have a singer on the panel.

i’ve not yet seen the show coz i aint in kenya at the moment tho from what i’ve read i think angela shud def not be a judge.. even tho she’s a brilliant radio presenter why could they not have picked someone like achieng abura… she def be a good judge with her strong musical background…

I really don’t know what the judges are expecting here. They ought to listen for those with raw talent that can grow as the show progresses. They’ve said no to just about every East African on two legs that’s auditioned. Perhaps Idols East Africa is going straight to a round of 20?
Here’s someone who watched the West Africa version from beginning to end and certainly won’t waste anymore time on this.
Advice: get rid of those judges.
People, please stop hating and let’s give the judges a chance. The auditions are supposed to be the funniest part of the show, so let’s not get too serious. Let’s enjoy the comic relief. I think the 3 judges are ok albeit that they’re quite young and probably not as experienced but they’re not half as bad comapred to the other 3 on Idols West Africa. Let me not start on Dede or that Ghanaian chick….
Yes I agree that scar is rude and could be a little bit more considerate in his remarks given that some of these kids are just starting out and could do with some constructive criticism but hey, that’s what the other two judges are for. We still need to have someone on the panel who will give it as it is. And frankly I think that he has softened since the first auditions in Nairobi. He’s not such a bad guy and he seems to know what he’s talking about.
As for Angela, she loves her eye candy and isn’t shy to say so. She needs to focus a little more on the singing than the cute boys. Having said that however, she is the perfect balance between scar and TK.
I still very much prefer Idols East Africa over the West Africa one. It’s much more hip and promises to be more entertaining.
Tanzania has been the biggest disappointment thus far. What in the world happened? Surely they could have done better than that.
Looks like Zambia has some pretty good talent. Let’s see what Botswana and Malawi have to offer.
I think Idols EastAfrica has been fun so far. The Judges ve been a bit fair, though scar could be very harsh and rude at times. Lets see where the overall performance ll take us to. ‘Am pretty sure we won’t be disappointed with the overall winner. Enjoy the auditions while it lasts. And hope to see someone else that will want to change Scar’s world. I bet he was indeed scared. Scary Scar……
Believe me, the show is getting stiff now. Am wondering what the judges were told to look out for. They seem to be throwing the good people away very easily and keeping mediocrers. I am really disappointed with both Scar and the Lady judge. She mostly. Lets hope we will eventually have a real Idol with their choice of an Idol.
I believe She is not a very good judge as far as music is concerned but she makes the show to be fantastic. She encourages every one, this is good. Some of the rude comments from Scar will destroy the destiny of many young talented musicians. ( but Scar is a good judge) We are all africans let us try to encourage one another. ( excluding the one who sang Bob marley song and ofcourse the young man who played the guiter at his back - crazy men)

I rather think scar is a lady’s man. i watched the Lusaka. He selected 2 girls that were avarage but he chose them. the expression on his face was telloing the whole story that he was being driven crazy not by the singing but by the beauty, body and the looks of these girls. i bet he followed them up so that he gets to meet them privately. i also watched a portion from Mtv when they were in harare, Zimbabwe. he also selected one lady when al the othe two TK, and Angie had not selected. he just wanted to impress this girl and follow her up. i wont be surprised if he has girlfriends all over.

He is a bloc and needs to learn how to be tolerant and patient. For Scar not to see any good quality in any of the the participant means he is not a good guy at all.

Angela not only hosts a radio and Karaoke but she’s also a musician. She use to sing with the ultimate band (Nyambane’s band at club Afrique) and yes she can really sing.
i think its good she’s there to balance the comments from the two guys.

I think the selection of the judges should be revised. I mean seriously. Scar as good as he is with his work he is taking his work a little too personal. The comments he passes do not at all leave him with the dignity ones deserves of taking part of the contest.
TK on the other hand has character issues, you know I think all judges should have this personna thats there to make the show what it should be you know. Dull comes from the way you pass comments on people the reactions and so forth and making people sing fifteen times and asking why you think you can win hundred times with a threatening look and all.
Despite the fact that truth should be told in competions it should be entertainment not the slaughter of the unborn singer coz you got two albums and shit. How do you use the word discussing to describe a voice and you claim to be in the music biz, Scar? Come on dog. And this thing of saying your voice is all over the place is gone way too much to say in one show jeez man.

I am from lagos nigeria in west africa and don’t and haven’t heard about thejudges but believe me they are so poor i wonder how on earth they are judges o a programme like this.It make thewhole show look like a local talent hunt show.

I don’t understand what that TK dude is doing over there as a Judge. He doesn’t have a mind of his own, never says anything original and seems to have a flair for always making the wrong judgments. Scar, Mr Cowell wannabes, never makes a constructive criticism…always a simple NO !!! or some insult to the contestant. As a matter of fact, both male judges seem to be having a competition of their own, trying to say the meanest thing ever to a contestant !!! As for Angela, she might not have the best music pedigree to be a judge, but she’s coming off here as the person with the best ears for good talent … lastly, I must say Kudos to the contestants from Zambia, they really raised the bar of the competition…they did a good job !!

Scar is okay as a Judge after i checked is profile but Tk doesnt have a mind of his own and sometimes he doesnt have listening hears to the contestants who feels they are nervous..and Angela is just not fit to be a judge of the show because she’s got nothing to show for it,, she might just go and be a judge for a fashion show.hehehe..

i think you’re missing the point, Idols is not just about a voice, its about a total package, voice, looks, personality, i really tried to figure out Angela, i used to think she was too generous with her yes’s but she is much more rounded than Scar or TK. aNYWAY, HERE IN nIGERIA WE ENJOY THE SHOW, AND SHES EASY TO LOOK AT.

I love scar. He’s a pefectionist. It’s either you’re there or you’re out. There’s no siting on the fence. He has a task to present to the whole world an uncompromised idol: an idol who can represent him and boost his personality and not one of questionable talent.
No one can please the world. He is tough, no doubt about that; but also remember that his reputation and talent are at stake.
Italian referee, Kolina, wouldn’t have been ticked best world referee if his reputation was questionable.

AS FOR ANGELA, She acts like a jezebell and why is trying to run the show? She has dis pesonality that makes me angry anytime she appers on the screen with her very ugly hair style and so fake acsent she shd pls stick to her radio programe i realy dont want to see her on tv again.
I dont mind Angela’s central role in all that: her comments and remarks. I like the panel’s criticism too…they dont just criticise - they make it creative! It’s the admiration i have for Angela that brought me to this site. But - i ask - did she really kiss Scar?

Secondly Angela is the sentimental backbone. u need emotional content in a show like this so back up off a sista. she still doing her job and if yall can do better Y AINT U IN HER CHAIR???…..thought so…shut the F**K up then….tierd of haters!
Tk (JJ) is an idiot. He’s not intelligent at all and tries hard to supply intelligent criticism to the contestants but fails dismally at most times. He would do us all a great favour to just follow the contestants out after telling them the crap he usually does and go criticize himself about his lack of intelligence. The lady in the middle is just that. Too much make-up - what is she hiding? Lastly, too much perverse ogling at innocent, terrified contestants. Scar seems to be the only one who really knows why he is there but I guess anyone’s clearest judging abilities would heavily be impaired by the sometimes atrocious auditioning hopefuls coupled by equally atrocious judging colleagues. Overall I feel the panel is too young to be saddled with such an enormous task. They all seem to still be a bit too green in their knowledge of music in general and seem to struggle with some older song titles and more traditionally African songs. They constantly (JJ) request “popular” songs which keep us tortured with all sorts of variations of Neo’s “So Sick” which I am sure so many are just so sick of by now. Nonetheless, the laughs from the fiasco that is Idols East & Southern Africa are at times really welcome but it is sometimes very sad to observe how a large number of our African brothers and sisters, through no direct fault of their own, lack the most moderate of perceived sophistication that governs the global village to allow us to compete fairly with the rest of the world along those standards. Why then (JJ) are they constantly being asked to perform “popular” songs and judged along those standards? Does Africa have nothing to offer the rest of the world instead of a distorted rendition of what Africa has been force-fed by the West?
Scar, my outie, you have done well to “kiss” Angela. In fact, I commend you for keeping true to the Mzansi way. Nothing escapes if ilahlile. Walahla, wadojwa!!
You guys are obviously watching the wrong show. From what i have seen, Angela is the only judge who analyzed the wannabes. Scar or whatever is called makes stupid hand gestures ad TK the supposed known music producer looks up to her and only mutters so much after she’s spoken.
Whats wrong with her complimenting the way the contestant are dressed? Do you realise that by doing so, the contestant actually relax?

The problem with the show is the calibre of peolpe coming to audition and of course the boys judging the wannabes.
All in all , very hilarious and a must see show to unwind after a long day at work.
For sure i dont know what Angie is doing on the show? And the unfortunate thing is, she is there to bias the other two male who are supposed to be professionals. If she thinks someone looks good, then she gives a YES and the other two follow suit. Infact my 8 year old son could see they are not identifying talent. They are so predictable. When someone walks in, even before they perform, ma son says ‘ Mum, she will say YES for that one’ and believe me, angela will do exactly that! So we have changed the way of enjoying the show, we predict from their looks if they will make it!
Besides, they can encourage the artists. a NO doesn’t mean end of life, but the way they harass them…. my God. They are such discouragers and all should take leave and learn from the american idol.

As far as im concerned, all the judges are just not appropriate for the Idols. for one scare is hard core raper who knows nothing about musical notes or pop music. TK is a producer for rapers or so called “kwaito” wich makes him unqaulified to judge a pop competition. Lets not even talk about Angie…. WHAT THE HELL DOES SHE KNOW ABOUT MUSIC???? last time i checked this was not a cariokee competition. and please someone must stop her from giving out her sleezy complements..

Guys, I have a slight problem with the judges, why do they let contestants sing for a long time? As far as I’m concerned, when they know music, they should recognise a talent immediately when contestants start singing. They shouldn’t drag the whole show. And another thing, when someone is good, they will tell him/her to sing again, what is that?
It is unproffessional for them to laugh like this when contestants are singing, they are there to judge not to laugh, especially TK. I even wonder why is he laughing like this, because he can’t even sing.
Don’t get me wrong, I like them, especially Angela and Scar but, if they carry on like this, they will be a joke to the whole world.

geez this show is a real rib cracker and i call scar ‘vampire’ cos he is always ready to eat the scary ones alive and raw mennnnn… i like him and he makes me laugh real hard. Did u say he kissed angie??? yikes!!! go scar, u the man. I remember one very funny part where one of the wannabes sang ‘ i believe i can fly’ and was raising his ‘wings’ and flying and scar raised his own wings and flew with him, hehe. Thats very funny. And hey guys do u remember that dumb guy that didnt understand English and sat on the floor when he was told to stand on the idol sign?? gees man, wat planet is he from, thats the dumbest thing i ever saw, hahaha.
Also the rude sick girl that came with her passport and sang trash and when told NO said ‘yea well i wont even bother to come back next year’….hmmm pathetic.
I think angie is ok, she balances the equation and tries to relax the already very scared to death ones, good job angie. I love her voice too i may add.
Tk… i dont really like. he is too quick to say ‘ a definite No for me’ even for the good singers most times. As a judge u should not be too quick to judge or u might make mistakes.
On the whole, the show sucks but i might as well have fun while it lasts and u should do the same, ok? relax

i think the judges are a bit awkward esp Scar…He deliberately intimidates this guys and that is not right.TK can spot talent when he sees it.
i never watched Idols so intensively until lately.I think idols show is some sort of comedy…we all know the show strives to identify good talent but the way Scar conducts himself is just uncalled for.i was shocked when he made a comment about a guy’s looks, saying he can scare kids way….You don’t have to go that far when you r making a comment about someone ’s looks, it’s very immoral and very stupid of him to say so, but nevertheless he is a judge.

To be sincere i like Angela i think she is among the sexiest lady i have come across , i like her smile and her attitude . As a judge i think she suites the job coz of her personality and expression towards the crowds. i wish am gonna meet her and kiss her ribs she looks wonderful. keep it up Angela.
Just wanted to let y’all know that Angela does have an extensive musical background. She is also an experienced and very talented vocalist . I respect everyone’s right to form an opinion and make your own conclusions, but I find it intriguing that there is a blog dedicated to Angela’s qualifications as an idol judge.

This goes to Angela.Shes about the best person among the judges cos even if shes going 2 say no,she does it in a friendly way n makes u feel relaxed.Tk is an ok guy also but Scar.what kind of name is that,kind of reminds me of scar in lion king.Sorry to say this man but if u wanna tell somebody NO do it in a polite way.The way u insult them is fucked up man.Very positive that you cant even win idol in a state in Nigeria man.
Personally, i love watching the idols. I’m probably one of those nasty people who can’t help but laugh my heart out when i hear guys sing completely off-key. I think TK is an okay judge, Angela is too compromising-even to people who clearly can’t sing- as for Scar……well, he’s a different ball game. I think Scar rocks!!! If a dude can’t sing, he can’t sing, period. Whether you say it in one word or 20, the dude will never be able to sing. Its better to get straight to the point, you might be doing that person a favor, after all, if you use many polite words, they might interprete it to mean that they can sing, just not @ the idols.
I personally take it as a good form of “entertainment” pardon my taste. It reminds some of us of the first time we sang especially in public OMG!! I actually think they are trying plus they have guts to appear on tele with such performances woi woi. Anyway guys lets be a little bit optimistic we might just come up with an idol!!! Some of them are not that bad you agree with me don’t you?
Ohh about Angela I think she is there for a purpose you certainly don’t think the organizers of Idols are “slow” they must have had a reason for putting her there. Lets give her some space. Please Ang try and comment on something musical next time. sawa?

Hey!!, you can say what ever you wont to say about my spelling,writing,….. etc. but the fast still remains, that the judging is not professional and considerate(considering the locations).
And for you called sayitright or what did you call youself this is a place where people express them self,not lecturing other about their spellings. If you’ve problem understanding some one you can say it, as was done,not insulting people as if you gave birth to them.
